The view of the Sangre De Christo mountains, as we drove into the small town of Crestone.

Crestone, CO is a tiny town like no other in the world. Just south of it is a covenanted community called the Baca Grande, with over 1000 year-round residents and about 30 spiritual retreat centers and monasteries. The purpose of the community is spiritual practice, and the retreat centers facilitate practice in many of the worlds’ religions: Hindu, Roman Catholic, Shinto, Zen, Bon, Vipassana, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. People come from around the world to attend retreats and teachings, dozens of religious retreatants live in hermitages high on the mountain slopes, and several meditation masters are in residence.

Native Americans have been coming to this sacred area at the base of the Sangre de Christo Mountains for about 15,000 years. It was considered a sacred place to die.”

This is a super fun off-roading road we found at the base of the The Great Sand Dunes!  If you go really fast you slide around on the fine sand and it feels like your are snowboarding on powder.  It was so much fun!  We left, promising to return someday!

And then, of course, we got out to the car to go play on the dunes.  They are so massive and ongoing.  We tired out after only making it to the top of a couple dunes.  There seemed to be no “summit” So we ran around and jumped off edges and cart-wheeled,took pictures, took videos, did handsprings…..

The other side of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.  We rented a cabin in the foothills and spent Sunday reading.  How luxurious.
