If I had my Life to live over….

October 26th, 2010 · La Vida

By Don Harold

Of course, you can’t unfry an egg, but there is no law against thinking about it.

If I had my life to live over, I would try to make more mistakes.
I would relax. I know of very few things that I would take seriously.
I would go more places. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers.
I would eat more ice cream and less bran.

I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary troubles.
You see, I have been one of those fellows who live prudently and sanely, hour after hour, day after day.
Oh, I have had my moments. But if I had it to do over again, I would have more of them – a lot more.

I never go anywhere without a thermometer, a gargle, a raincoat and a parachute.
If I had it to do over, I would travel lighter.

If I had my life to live over, I would pay less attention to people telling us we must learn Latin or History; otherwise we will be disgraced and ruined and flunked and failed.
I would seek out more teachers who inspire relaxation and fun.

If I had my life to live over, I would start barefooted a little earlier in the spring and stay that way a little later in the fall.
I would shoot more paper wads at my teachers.
I would keep later hours.

I’d have more sweethearts.
I would go to more circuses.
I would be carefree as long as I could, or at least until I got some care- instead of having my cares in advance.

I doubt, however, that I’ll do much damage with my creed.
The opposition is too strong.
There are too many serious people trying to get everybody else to be too darned serious.

Sangre De Cristo Mountains, Crestone,Sand Dunes and Westcliff

October 13th, 2010 · La Vida

The view of the Sangre De Christo mountains, as we drove into the small town of Crestone.

Crestone, CO is a tiny town like no other in the world. Just south of it is a covenanted community called the Baca Grande, with over 1000 year-round residents and about 30 spiritual retreat centers and monasteries. The purpose of the community is spiritual practice, and the retreat centers facilitate practice in many of the worlds’ religions: Hindu, Roman Catholic, Shinto, Zen, Bon, Vipassana, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. People come from around the world to attend retreats and teachings, dozens of religious retreatants live in hermitages high on the mountain slopes, and several meditation masters are in residence.

Native Americans have been coming to this sacred area at the base of the Sangre de Christo Mountains for about 15,000 years. It was considered a sacred place to die.”

This is a super fun off-roading road we found at the base of the The Great Sand Dunes!  If you go really fast you slide around on the fine sand and it feels like your are snowboarding on powder.  It was so much fun!  We left, promising to return someday!

And then, of course, we got out to the car to go play on the dunes.  They are so massive and ongoing.  We tired out after only making it to the top of a couple dunes.  There seemed to be no “summit” So we ran around and jumped off edges and cart-wheeled,took pictures, took videos, did handsprings…..

The other side of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.  We rented a cabin in the foothills and spent Sunday reading.  How luxurious.

Pawnee Buttes

October 12th, 2010 · La Vida

My friend Jeff and I set out on Saturday for a moto trip out to North Eastern Colorado.  We rode through the Pawnee National grasslands.  It was……….beautiful, I guess.  One may not think so immediately but the vastness was incredible.  It made for great photographs and a wonderful landscape to think in!

The Bucksnort Saloon

October 12th, 2010 · La Vida

For football Sunday (last Sunday), Eli and I decided to head up to The mountains to the little saloon, up a windy narrow dirt road, along the river.  It a rustic cabin in the middle of the woods with a warm, buzzing atmosphere.  Lots of different people are attracted to this place.  You have your Sunday drive folks, your Harley bar folks, your dual sport adventure folks, your football folks, your grandmas and grandpas visiting folks, your family folks….. In the little  parking lot where someone’s driveway gets blocked from people frequenting the bar, they’ve handmade a beautiful sign letting folks know, that there is a driveway there so Please don’t block it!!

Funny things is, they spelled blocking wrong!

October 4th, 2010 · La Vida

The night before my birthday, while I was at work, the kids and Richard (my roommates) decorated my entire room! Complete with flowers cake and balloons.  I was delighted!

To celebrate my birthday, Eli took me to a Rockies Game!  They ended up winning in the bottom of the ninth home run…yes!!
